-In 2003, the Board fired manager Kevin Davis. A In 2004 audit revealed irregularities. A new law reconstituted the Board in June 2005. The Board consists of seven members, appointed for 5-year terms, at $250 per month. The Franklin County Board chair appoints two, the Jefferson County Board chair appoints two, and the mayors of Benton, West Frankfort, and Mt. Vernon appoint one each.

2008: In the 2008 general election, in a referendum, the voters rejected the county board’s attempt to extend the “public safety tax” which had been imposed to build the county jail and which was due to end on January 1, 2009. However, the county failed to take the necessary steps to stop the collection of the tax, and the state department of revenue ruled that the tax had to be collected until July 1, 2009.
