2008: In the 2008 general election, in a referendum, the voters rejected the county board’s attempt to extend the “public safety tax” which had been imposed to build the county jail and which was due to end on January 1, 2009. However, the county failed to take the necessary steps to stop the collection of the tax, and the state department of revenue ruled that the tax had to be collected until July 1, 2009.
